Mountain Avenue Improvements

In 2021, the City's Traffic and Transporation Commission recommended staff evaluate Mountain Avenue for a improvement project.

On January 27, 2022, staff presented a report on the Mountain Avenue Corridor Study prepared by Advantec Consulting Engineers, Inc. (Advantec) and recommended phased improvements. The report outlined proposed improvements for the Mountain Avenue segment between Base Line Road and Foothill Boulevard.

In March 2022, UC Berkeley conducted an assessment on Mountain Avenue from Base Line Road to Bonita Avenue to evaluate potential complete street features as a corridor project. 

At the September 22, 2022 Traffic and Transportation Commission (TTC) meeting, staff provided two presentations to update the Commission on the progress made with the Mountain Avenue Corridor Study and to outline the future proposed steps to complete this project. One presentation was given on the UC Berkeley CSSA process and a second presentation was provided to update the TTC on the project's future steps and schedule. 

Following the two analyses provided for Mountain Avenue, the City Council approved a contract with KOA at their January 24, 2023 meeting to cover the design phase of the project.  

On June 22, 2023, staff presented the 30% plans for a study session to gather TTC and public input for consideration. All comments and feedback received by KOA for consideration were included in a staff report the TTC on October 16, 2023.

During the project design phase, the City received additional public feedback requesting that the TTC consider new roadway configurations that accommodate Class IV bike lanes instead of Class II bike lanes. The TTC considered three different Class IV options at their October 26, 2023 meeting. At this meeting, the TTC concurred with Staff, supporting the recommendation that included Class II green bike lanes, with the addition of the recommended accessibility and pedestrian features, requested by the public during this re-evaluation process
